31/01/2020 · The film, which follows the characters of Gretel (IT’s Sophia Lillis) and her little brother, Hansel (Sammy Leakey), wastes no time in setting up a tragic story of witchcraft being both embraced Hansel is only 8 years old and doesn’t really understand the situation, and her mother is shown to be cruel in general, so it’s not like the narrative is trying to paint them as correct — but the only person to ever directly point out the barbarity of Gretel’s situation (aside from Gretel herself) is… the witch. So just like in the original tale, it’s Gretel who saves the day by using her newfound powers to kill the witch and save her brother – but instead of the kids returning home, Gretel has a friendly horse take Hansel away to the convent – and Gretel remains in the woods, taking over residence of the cottage and vowing in the narration that she’ll use her powers to bring light instead of Gretel & Hansel may have grand compositions and set design, but the pacing is less nurturing of the constricting unease required to do what The Witch does so deftly. What results is more of a daydream than a nightmare, a film whose spell you fall in and out of in equal measure. Gretel & Hansel: B .
